Best HMB Supplements for Bodybuilding in 2024

Winner - Nutricost HMB

Whether you’re a seasoned fitness veteran or just beginning your journey to a stronger body, HMB combined with exercise can be an effective formula for helping build muscle.

Taking HMB can help support muscle gain and reduce muscle loss. This is great for all adults who exercise regularly and especially important for aging athletes.

With a crazy amount of information online and so many options, I know it can be overwhelming to figure out what is legit. Which one is the best price? What should I look for in an HMB supplement?

To help you, I have researched, ordered, and tried 6 kinds of HMB. I ranked them based on their qualities, which you can read about at the bottom of this page! Since HMB comes in both powders and capsules, I included both kinds in this list. Keep reading!

Let’s get to it!

What I loved:

  • GREAT price of $17.20 per bottle
  • 120 servings
  • 3rd-Party Tested
  • GMP-Compliant Facility
  • FDA-Registered Facility
  • Targeted Formula
  • Non-GMO
  • Gluten-Free
  • 1000 MG of HMB per serving

What could be better:

  • Can be out of stock
  • Some people think capsules are too big

What I loved:

Our winner was an easy choice - it shines in pretty much every category. Nutricost has a potent formula containing 1,000 MG of HMB in each serving. This is a great dosage, falling perfectly in the range of the daily dose recommended by professionals.

The majority of the formula is just HMB, with a touch of calcium (140 MG per serving). There are no unnecessary ingredients.

The Nutricost Capsules are also gluten-free and non-GMO. To get a full serving, take 2 capsules per serving as directed by the bottle.

Each bottle only costs $17.20. Combine that with the highest number of servings on this list (120 servings per bottle), an incredible formula, and you have an unbeatable deal.

Nutricost HMB is backed by third-party testing to ensure its high quality. These capsules are also manufactured in GMP-compliant and FDA-registered facilities, contributing to their high quality.

The busier I get, the more important long-lasting bottles become to me. It’s important that I don’t have to mess around with re-ordering all the time, so I like that the Nutricost HMB bottle will last about 4 months or more. Most HMB supplements suggest taking HMB daily, whether you are working out or resting.

What could be better:

There is not much room for improvement here. You can get a bottle of HMB that combines HMB and Vitamin D, but as far as pure HMB, it doesn't get much better . Some people find the capsules on the larger side, but I didn’t have a problem with them.

Occasionally, HMB by Nutricost can be out of stock due to their popularity. However, Nutricost usually gets things back on the shelves ASAP!

What I loved:

  • 90 servings!
  • $17.99 per bottle
  • 3rd-Party Tested
  • GMP-Compliant Facility
  • FDA-Registered Facility
  • Targeted Formula
  • Non-GMO
  • Gluten-Free

What could be better:

  • More servings

What I loved:

This is another all-star HMB option. 90 servings is a nice big number and can last for up to three months, depending on how many times you take HMB. Some people don’t take it on rest days, so that could also make it last longer.

The formula is targeted - just 1,000 MG of HMB plus 140 MG of calcium per serving. Each serving is two capsules, and they are non-GMO and gluten-free. This is very similar to our #1 pick above.

This is another brand that has gone above and beyond 3rd-party testing to guarantee high-quality supplements. Primaforce products are manufactured in a GMP-compliant facility that is also registered with the FDA. This is a cut above, which helps it rank on my list!

What could be better:

The only thing that could be better is the serving size - 90 is great, but our #1 winner has more than 90. Overall this is a great product, and I don’t have any big complaints.

What I loved:

  • Powdered option
  • $19.95
  • 250 servings!
  • 3rd-Party Tested
  • GMP-Compliant Facility
  • FDA-Registered Facility
  • Targeted Formula
  • Non-GMO
  • Gluten-Free
  • 1000 MG of HMB per serving

What could be better:

  • Not a great taste
  • Hard to mix

What I loved:

This price-to-serving ratio is seriously great. 250 servings for $19.95!!! This powdered form of HMB is for those who don’t like taking capsules each day. Just mix one scoop with a glass of water and get your hydration on while you feed your muscles.

It has all the bells and whistles that I’ve come to expect from Nutricost. The formula has HMB and a little bit of calcium. It is gluten-free and non-GMO.

Even better, this product is manufactured in an FDA-registered and GMP-compliant facility, which helps increase quality assurance. And, of course, it’s 3rd-party tested for purity.

What could be better:

Some people do not like the taste of HMB and prefer capsules. I do think it has a strong bitter flavor. This is true of all HMB powder, and not unique to Nutricost.

You could try it with juice or a smoothie, to see if that is better for you.

However, if capsules are not your thing, this Nutricost powder is a great option for supplementing with HMB.

What I loved:

  • Triple Strength Dose 3G per serving
  • $23.95
  • Free of soy, dairy, gluten, preservatives, wheat, and peanuts
  • 3rd-party tested

What could be better:

  • Only 60 servings
  • 4-capsule serving size

What I loved:

If you’re looking for a really strong dose of HMB, this could be for you. The price is still pretty good at $23.95 for 60 servings.

Each dose provides 3,000 MG of HMB plus 420 MG of calcium in a serving.

What could be better:

This one has a 4-capsule serving, which is more than most. However, that is because they were probably trying to make sure the capsules didn’t get as big as horse pills!

However, if you want a high-potency dose of HMB, this could be your golden ticket.

What I loved:

  • High Dose 3 G per serving
  • Highly rated with 4.5 stars on Amazon
  • Recognizable brand
  • Streamlined formula

What could be better:

  • $39.47
  • Only 30 servings per bottle

What I loved:

This is our first high-dose option for HMB on this list. This is for you if you want that big, 3 G serving of HMB.

The formula is only HMB, nothing else! You don’t have to worry about any unnecessary fillers or harmful additives.

I also know that Optimum Nutrition is a popular brand – they are definitely recognizable in the supplement industry as a big player.

What could be better:

This is definitely more expensive than other options on this list, but it also delivers a higher dose.

For those on a budget, this may not be your choice. However, if you’re looking for that punchy, 3 G of HMB each day, Optimum Nutrition has a notable option.

What I loved:

  • High potency dose of 3G per serving
  • Focused formula
  • Cool design!
  • Powdered option

What could be better:

  • Price is pretty high at $39.99
  • Only 30 servings

What I loved:

I love the look of this bottle. Let’s be real; sometimes, I pick things based on their aesthetics! The overall vibe definitely makes me feel cool, which shouldn’t be important to me, but I have to admit, I don’t mind.

Beyond Raw Chemistry Labs offers another high-potency dose of 3G per serving, and it comes in a powdered form. I know some people don’t like capsules, so you can mix one little scoop of this with 8oz of water for an easy HMB drink. It’s comparable to a creatine mix in terms of mixability, which is basically as good as it gets. Definitely not ‘smooth’ but definitely not clumpy either.

This formula is just HMB plus 13 mcg of vitamin D, so it’s extremely focused.

What could be better:

The label says that it is ‘lab grade,’ which sounds great. But I would like a little more information about what that means. It’s definitely not a bad thing, just something that could be explained more on the listing or the tub of HMB powder.

Also, the price per serving is pretty high compared to all the other options on this list. It’s also definitely higher than many options out there, running at over $1 per serving. Many HMB supplements only cost 16-30 cents per serving.

Why I Chose Nutricost

Nutricost HMB Is the Clear Winner

The standout choice for us was clear - it excels in nearly every aspect. Nutricost HMB boasts a robust formulation with a generous 1,000MG of HMB in every serving, which aligns seamlessly with the daily dose range recommended by experts.

The majority of the formula is just HMB, with a touch of calcium (140 MG per serving). This are no unnecessary ingredients in this HMB.

My Review Process

Here are the factors I considered for this review after researching, ordering, and trying them:

  • Quality
  • Pricing/Cost
  • Formula
  • Servings per bottle

With a wide range of HMB supplements to pick from, I did a lot of research beforehand. I picked the brands/products that had favorable reviews online and paid attention to top-ranking products on Amazon, too. For this list, you will see that I included both capsules and powder options.

Here's why those 4 factors above were extremely important to me when it came to ranking the top HMB supplements:

Rating Criteria

1. Quality

I always consider and make sure to note if products have been 3rd party tested for quality control and purity. Other quality factors include GMP certification and the possibility of an FDA-registered facility.

2. Cost

Getting your hands on a high-quality supplement doesn’t have to destroy your wallet. While our top priority will always be quality, I understand that price factors into many people’s buying decisions.

3. Formula

It’s important to check and see if you’re getting a good dose of HMB in each serving and no unnecessary fillers.

4. Servings Per Bottle

Lastly, the amount of servings per bottle was another big factor I considered. I wanted to find a product that would provide enough servings to last me several months at least so I didn’t constantly need to purchase the product over and over.

What is HMB?

Beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB) is a biological byproduct created when the amino acid leucine is metabolized by your body. When produced naturally, HMB is present in only trace amounts in the body.

The potential performance-enhancing properties of HMB have made it a popular dietary supplement in the health and fitness community. Many athletes supplement with HMB to help enhance strength training and increase lean body mass.
